The Legend of the Air Conditioning Dispute.
Got my new utilities bill recently, says I used 1656 kWh this past month. For reference my previous months(before the AC compress broke) were in the 300-350 range. I've typically used 11-12 kWh per day, the past two months went from 11.4 for May, to 31.2 for June, to 50.2 for July. Thus I have found myself with a $187 utilities bill this month. $49, $104, now $187, just a slight increase there. I bring this up because the office manager finally called me back today, a mere 16 days after I was told he would be calling. So naturally I got to sleep late, thus I have someone trying to haggle over numbers when I'm 3/4 asleep for having slept 2 hours. So he tried to argue that my bills weren't that much more than last year when (can you guess) my AC was also frozen over. Of course he didn't know that, now it wasn't broken and running constantly last year, but it did freeze over in similar fashion. See last year my computer would overheat if the apartment got much above 74 degrees, so I would use the air conditioning to keep the temp just below that. Well when it freezes up you don't get a ton of cold air coming out, thus leading me to leave it on longer. So I mentioned that and suggested using the previous months of March - May as a basis for typical usage without air conditioning concerns. So if you look there my electric bill has been $30 - $32 each month, slightly less than the $88 and $165 of these past two months. So he said based upon his estimates he could offer me $30 for these day months. Ok so let's do a little rough math here. $105 + $185 = $290 for the past two bills. Previous two bills before that, $49 + $49 = $98. So he says $30 would be "fair." leaving me with $260 for the two months, a paltry 250% increase. His argument was that it was "cold" March - May and thus I would have never turned on the AC, and thus the "slight" increase in what you would expect from me running the AC on a nominal basis. Of course we know that I've only run the AC 2 - 3 times during the previous 4 months, all those times in the first two weeks of June(based on the bill numbers I would estimate it broke late first week early second week of June). So what would you think would be "fair" for me to pay here? Well let's just say that I was trying to be deceptive and was really running an array of box-fans, an entire fleet of them, and not using the AC. Well how much would that affect my bill? Well let's just go and say there was a significant increase in my electric usage, so instead of the $30 - $32 seen in previous months I used a whopping $50 in electricity. Ok, So that would put my bills at around $70 each month, meaning I should be getting back $150. Now in reality I probably at worst used $40 each month in electricity, but even given that high estimate there I'd be entitled to $150 back, a "slight" amount more than the $30 offered as "fair." So I called up my utilities company and talked with them, asked if sending someone out to read the meter would be of any use. I was told they will probably just say that it is only 14 days since the previous bill and not a full month so that doesn't mean much. However it does serve one key purpose, that being defeating the whole "it was cold" argument. The past few weeks it has been warmer than the rest of the summer often hitting close to 90. So obviously if I was running my AC so much and wasting all this electricity it would show. Thus I am going to head out and find my electric meter and take a nice little picture, and then estimate my kWH usage. Should be in the typical 11 - 13 range. It's been raining so I haven't headed out there yet, but it seems to be slowing down so I will make my way over to there shortly. I also need to call the lawyer at housing and tell her what has gone on since I saw her on Monday. Then I'll need to head out to go pay my rent. So in closing I leave a picture of my (inside) AC unit as it looked 2 days before it was fixed. ( Frozen AC )UPDATE: Just checked the meter, 177 kWh used in 14 days. Which comes out to 12.6 kWh per day, which last time I checked was between 11 and 13. ^_~Oh and the music is for MK, pretty sure he can figure out what that is all about. ^_~ Hehe, here I'll leave you a second musical piece for this little episode:

So two days ago my smoke detector started the annoying "CHANGE MY BATTERY" beeping every other minute. Thus I went over and removed the battery, and planned to buy a replacement today. Went to look at the 9V batteries...what do I see? First one, bright and center. Duracel 9V, $4.29. I look slightly down and to the right, see another 9V, $3.49. Looking down towards the bottom of the batteries I see yet another 9V, Rayovac $1.79. So I buy that. Now why exactly is there such a disparity in the price of the batteries? I leave that answer(and the proceeding 3 paragraphs) up to Lewis Black. Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: Bad Religion - 21st Century Digital Boy | | Saturday, July 31st, 2004 | | 1:20 pm |

So...
¿What is everyone wishing for on tanabata today? One of mine is for management to actually answer the phone so I can get the AC fixed. Same problem as last July, it's all frozen over again, so I'm trying to call and see about getting it fixed. Hope everyone has a great day. ^_^ Current Mood: dorkyCurrent Music: Toshio Masuda - Promise | | Monday, July 5th, 2004 | | 5:13 am |

Haven't updated a while, haven't been feeling very well lately, and I've rather gotten into the habit of waking up in the 8 - midnight range. Need to pay rent today, and I'm supposed to have another viewing scheduled for my apartment today. I noticed the new Shutterbox is out, think I'll go on a little quest to find that while I'm out to pay my rent. It'll kill the $10 I've got, but I suppose that just means it's time for me to take out some more, only happens every 2 - 3 weeks anyway, so it's not like throwing my cash all over the place. Figured I should update and seemed like a good reason to me. ^_^ Current Mood: calmCurrent Music: Hitomi - Over the Sky [angel feather version] | | Sunday, June 20th, 2004 | | 11:56 am |
I tend to forget that I'm not as superbly coordinated when I'm sleep deprived. I just knocked over the plate I was stepping my tea on, spilling hot tea on my shirt and shorts. Well I suppose that was a better place then on my skin where it may have burned me... Current Mood: embarrassedCurrent Music: Blues Brothers - Peter Gunn Theme | | 11:37 am |
Well I'm trying here...
Trying to get back into making more regular updates, not quite as busy right now. So went out to the mall on Saturday, first time I've been out there in 6 - 8 weeks. They took the movie theater out again. I was thinking I'd head down there and catch some recent movies, but they took it out so that's obviously not happening. So ran around there looking around at games and stuff. Ran into a pair of mean 14 year old girls making fun of me. -_- Grabbed some food while out and returned back home, tried to sleep but couldn't once again. Most likely going to be up all night, but for now I think I will finish watching Slayers Great and then get a few hours of sleep. Well...
Just spent an hour rounding up some DVDs and putting them away in my case...my 208 carrier is now essentially full(there's empty spaces for the remaining DVDs in a few series but maybe 10 empty spaces max). I have several I didn't put in there either, none of my Last Exile, no of the new Slayers movies, didn't put Now and Then, Here and There in the carrier, no space. Looks like I'll need to be getting another one at some point, I've just got so many discs, really need to find some time and finish watching some of the ones I haven't had the chance to watch yet, I haven't even opened my Indiana Jones box and that's been sitting there for almost 4 months now, just haven't really watched a whole lot the since the new year, haven't really felt up to it I guess. Well the basketball game is on now and the dishwasher is finished, so I think I'll start thinking about making some food and get to watching the game. Yeah as long as they don't keep interrupting things with tornado/severe weather warning announcements, were doing that every 10 minutes during the last game. Yeah the river has done a minor amount of flooding, but nothing too significant. Oh well maybe it will make for another interesting night, and hopefully it will cool down a bit. Well I'm back...sort of...
So back from Chicago now, hopefully I'll post about that later(I tend to put these sorts of things off and then end up forgetting). I think my headache has finally gone away after roughly 36 hours of joy >_<. I don't really get headaches and usually when I do it's vision related, but in this case I don't think that was the cause. I think it was neck related, from carrying around all my bags on my shoulder. Started up shortly after jumping on the CTA yesterday and finally seemed to go away when I decided to walk up the store and go shopping. So I'm hoping that's it for the headache and I won't have to deal with that anymore. It was nice to be able to breathe easier while in Chicago, noticed that luxury a few minutes after I returned. So hopefully I'll update all of that soon, and maybe even the stuff from the 2 weeks before that. Current Mood: frustrated | | Saturday, May 8th, 2004 | | 8:27 am |

Well it's just a few hours to graduation now, not even sure if I'll be getting any sleep at all. Was a pretty crazy night, way too much fun. I'll post about the details later on. Current Mood: anxious | | Tuesday, April 27th, 2004 | | 7:45 am |
My math final is today, not having much lucky sleeping, pretty tired though. Doesn't really matter on the final, even if I pulled off a 0 I still get a high A in the class. It's all on Laplace transforms and related material such as Dirac's Delta Function. Shouldn't be too bad. Managed to pick up my grad gear yesterday, actually had tassels in stock this time. Haven't checked it out to see if it's alright, maybe I'll do that tonight. Well time to try watching a DVD or something to try and get myself asleep.
